POCSO stands for the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. It is an Indian law that was enacted in (November’14th) 2012 to address the issue of sexual abuse and exploitation of children.
What is POCSO?
The key objectives of the POCSO Act are:
- To protect children from sexual abuse and exploitation.
- To provide a child-friendly legal system for the speedy trial of offenses.
- To establish special courts for the trial of POCSO cases to ensure timely justice.
- To define various sexual offenses against children and prescribe punishments for each offense.
The act defines various sexual offenses against children and outlines stringent punishments for offenders.
The POCSO Act also emphasizes the importance of the child’s welfare throughout the legal process and includes provisions for the child’s privacy, protection, and support during investigations and trials. POCSO is about creating safer environment for children and ensure their rights and dignity are protected from sexual exploitation and abuse.
The act covers a wide range of offenses, including but not limited to, sexual assault, penetrative sexual assault, sexual harassment, using a child for pornographic purposes, and using a child for pornographic purposes online. It considers any person below the age of 18 years as a child for the purposes of this act.
How to be POCSO Complainant as an Educational Institution?
The Educational Institution will have to conduct the “POCSO – Complainant Training” for all their teaching and non-teaching staff, who will in interaction with children, as a part of their profession or work conduct.
This training is important for both, the adults and the children involved. The adults will know about what is permissible, and what is needed, when it comes to create a safe learning environment for children. It ensures and helps them learn the correct method of communication, discipling and instructing children.
How to enroll for POCSO Complainant Training?
POCSO – Complainant Training with ‘The NewAge Therapist’, is an intensive 2-3 hour program, including awareness and behavior training for teachers, teaching styles, student psychology, school and student safety, recognizing abuse and reporting, legal procedures and providing immediate mental health help to students in distress, until professional help arrives.
Certificates will be provided to the Institution (yearly) and to the individual participants.
